Sometimes, you need a friend on your journey. The spiritual journey can be filled with some unknowns, and having someone with you is refreshing and provides hope and encouragement. This is what I experienced with JB as my spiritual director. His gentleness is just what I needed at that time of my life. He mostly just listened as I worked things out in my soul and affirmed and challenged my thoughts. 

There is no judgment in this relationship, just friendship, but more than just a casual friendship, and it is a friend on the journey with you. He may not have gone on the same journey I had, and it is not about his experience as much as his guidance and affirmation that it is okay to question and “work it all out.” Scripture tells us to work out our faith in “fear and trembling.” I can imagine what it would be like to have had to go through this on my own.
